Swiss bank boxes from the Swiss Federal Bank. One of the principals of
Micheloud & Cie was able to privately acquire from a large Swiss bank a few
of these cult items, highly prized in Switzerland as unique pieces of Swiss
banking history.

Swiss banks safe deposit vaults usually hold extremely precious and sometimes highly secret
objects and documents. Many clients would be foreign and even the bank doesn't know
what is inside its bank boxes. What was in yours? Gold bars? Works of art? A Russian icon perhaps, or love letters?
Compromising documents or jewels? Nobody can know and over the almost 100 years this box has been used
there were probably many owners.
The Swiss Federal Bank (Banque Fédérale or Eidgenössische Bank) was one of
the leading banks in
Switzerland since its foundation in 1863 by former Swiss President Mr Stämpfli. The bank had
state-of-the art Fichet safe deposit vaults in all its branches. One of these vaults
was miraculously preserved in another bank who acquired the bank building after
a merger. In 2004 this vault was moved and some of the original Swiss
Federal Bank boxes could be saved. Each box measures approximately 270x470x85mm, with some taller boxes and a few out
of size. The boxes open front and top on hinges. These boxes have been taken apart and polished by hand to restore their
original shine. Being century old items, they still have many small bumps and
scratches which give them their unique appeal. Some boxes have been given a
layer of special transparent lacquer to preserve their shine. The unlacquered
boxes can be given a quick polish now and then to make them shine even brighter.
The padlockable brass cover is fully hand polished and laquered and shines
beautifully while retaining its antique character.
